The San Diego Zoo is a favorite in the San Diego area. The exhibits are well done and it’s a great family-friendly experience that both kids and adults can enjoy!

One of our favorite things about the San Diego Zoo is the fact that they were one of the main pioneers in the concept of open-air exhibits “careless” exhibits that mimicked the animals natural habitat.

The exhibits at the zoo are top notch and well done.

The Giant Panda Exhibit

The San Diego Zoo is also one of the only zoos in the world that successfully houses and breeds the Giant Panda. They have an entire exhibit dedicated to the Panda and it’s fun and very unique experience for visitors.

Additional Highlights

The skyfari gives visitors a birds eye view of the park, and can take you from one side of the park to the other if you want to quickly get around. (Keep in mind, you can’t bring strollers on Skyfari, but they do have a dedicated area to drop your stroller off to pick up when you return.)

Zoo Tours

The San Diego Zoo offers a guided tour bus that covers about 75% of the park. It’s a great way to get a quick overview at the beginning of your day and get a better idea of where you want to spend your time. The park is really large, and would be nearly impossible for a family to see and enjoy all the animals. The tour bus allows you to see a large number of animals quickly, so you can spend more time at the exhibits that you enjoy the most.

Conservation Efforts

The San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation raises a variety of over 145 endangered species. As a result they have been able to successfully reintroduce more than 30 endangered species back into the wild. It is the largest zoo based multidisciplinary research effort in the world.

Q Be Prepared

Q Handicap & Stroller Access

The San Diego Zoo offers several services to accommodate guests with disabilities. Keep in mind there are a lot of steep grades throughout the San Diego Zoo, but the Zoo does offer the free Shuttle Bus to help those who need it to get around.

Wheelchairs and motorized wheelchairs are available to rent on a first come first serve basis.

The entire park is paved trails and are all stroller friendly.

The Zoo does rent strollers, but I would recommend bringing your own. The rental strollers are uncomfortable for kids, and since you’ll likely be there for a significant amount of time, it’s worth bringing your own.

Q Bathroom Access

There are bathrooms in every Exhibit throughout the Zoo.

Additional Details

  • Age Restrictions:None. The Zoo is very large so keep in mind that little ones might struggle to walk through the entire park. A stroller is definitely a good idea here.
